Oklahoma has two licensing boards with different rules:

  • MDs are licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision (often called the Oklahoma Medical Board) under OAC Title 435.
  • DOs are licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners (OSBOE) under OAC Title 510.

Check the section for your own license.

MDs: Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision

How many hours, and what kind

OAC 435:10-15-1(a), in the version effective September 1, 2026, requires each physician to "certify every three years" that he or she has completed 60 hours of Category I CME in the preceding three years "as defined by the American Medical Association, Oklahoma State Medical Association, or the American Academy of Family Physicians." AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and AAFP Prescribed credit both count.

AOA Category 1-A is not named for MDs. The Board's 2023 summary also allowed credit from "other certifying organization recognized by the Board," but that phrase is gone from the current rule. Confirm with the Board before relying on AOA credit.

There is no carryover. Missing the requirement can bring a non-disciplinary fine of up to $1,000 (59 O.S. 495a.1(B)).

When your license is due

Every MD reregisters every year during the month of initial licensure, and the rule allows no grace period (OAC 435:10-7-10). The 60 hours are reported at every third reregistration. If you do not apply for reregistration within 60 days after the registration period ends, your license is suspended (59 O.S. 495d).

The pain management or opioid hour — every year

59 O.S. 495a.1(C) requires "not less than one (1) hour of education in pain management or one (1) hour of education in opioid use or addiction each year preceding an application for renewal of a license," unless you show the Board that you do not hold a current DEA registration. OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(4) applies it to every licensee with a DEA number. Because MDs reregister every year, this hour is due every year, even though the 60 general hours are counted over three.

Your first renewal

"Newly licensed physicians will be required to begin reporting three years from the date licensure was granted" (OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(3)). Your first CME report covers your first three years and needs the full 60 hours. The yearly pain or opioid hour applies from your first reregistration if you hold a DEA registration.

Reporting and audits

At reregistration you report your continuing education (59 O.S. 495a.1(A)(9)). Each year Board staff select licensees for audit, at random or for cause. If you are selected, you have 30 days to send proof. The Board accepts:

  • a current AMA Physician's Recognition Award;
  • board certification or recertification during the three-year period from an ABMS, ABPS or NBPAS specialty board;
  • residency or fellowship training in the preceding three years (50 hours per completed year); or
  • copies of your Category I certificates.

CE Broker is the Board's official CE/CME tracking system, and a basic account is free.

DOs: Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners

How many hours, and what kind

OAC 510:10-3-8(b) requires, for each annual renewal, "sixteen (16) American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Category One hours" of CME, earned in the CME cycle of July 1 to June 30. The rule says "Category One" without separating 1-A and 1-B; Category 1-B is part of AOA Category 1, so it appears to count.

Osteopathic physicians "who are obtaining or maintaining board certification through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)" may use 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ hours instead (510:10-3-8(b)(1)). AAFP Prescribed credit is not named, so confirm with the Board before relying on it.

A 2026 change to the statute, 59 O.S. 641 as amended by SB 1984 (effective November 1, 2026), now says "at least sixteen (16) hours" of the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association's annual educational program or its equivalent. Before, it said "two (2) days." The Board's rule already counted 16 AOA Category 1 hours from any source, so the number you need does not change.

When your license expires

"All Oklahoma Osteopathic Physician licenses expire on June 30 of each year." Renewal opens May 1. The renewal fee is due before July 1, and a late fee applies after that (510:10-3-8(c)). For 2026 the Board allowed late renewal from July 1 to August 31. A license that is not renewed is canceled at the Board's September regular meeting; you can ask to reinstate it within two years with proof of 16 current-cycle hours (510:10-3-8(g)).

The proper prescribing hour — every year

One of the 16 hours each year must cover prescribing controlled dangerous substances, dedicated to pain management, opioid use or addiction, from a course previously approved by the OSBOE (59 O.S. 641(D)(2); 510:10-3-8(b)(2)). The Board publishes a list of approved proper prescribing courses, and the course sponsor reports your hour to CE Broker. DOs who do not hold Oklahoma OBNDD or DEA authority to handle controlled substances are exempt and must enter that exception in CE Broker. The Board's 2026 newsletter says a completed OSBOE educational audit can also meet this hour.

Medical marijuana — 2 hours a year for recommending physicians

A DO registered with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) to recommend medical marijuana must complete at least 2 hours of CME on medical marijuana before recommending and every year after (510:10-3-8(b)(3); 63 O.S. 427.10(G)). The CME must be Board-approved or certified by the ACCME, the AOA or another organization the Board recognizes. Since January 1, 2026, a physician must be on the OMMA registry to recommend.

Residents, fellows and first renewal

If you were a resident or fellow at any time during the July 1 to June 30 CME cycle, you are exempt for that cycle. CME starts the first July 1 after you graduate (510:10-3-8(b)(5)). Enter the exception in CE Broker. The rule has no other first-renewal waiver, so confirm with the Board if you were licensed partway through a cycle.

Reporting

CE Broker is required. Enter all CME and completion certificates in your CE Broker account; a free basic account is enough (510:10-3-8(b)(6)). The online renewal includes a CME completion check and "will not permit continuing the renewal unless CME requirements are met." Exceptions must be entered for each CME cycle.

For both MDs and DOs

Medical Treatment Laws presentation — every two calendar years

If you are associated with an inpatient health care services entity, such as a hospital, you must watch the Oklahoma Medical Board's online presentation on the state's Medical Treatment Laws at least once in each consecutive two-calendar-year period (63 O.S. 3162(C)). It covers the Hydration and Nutrition for Incompetent Patients Act, the Nondiscrimination in Treatment Act, the Oklahoma Advance Directive Act, the Do-Not-Resuscitate Act and the Assisted Suicide Prevention Act. It runs at least one hour, ends with a quiz and gives you a dated certificate, and your facility keeps a copy. The time counts toward your required CE, not in addition to it. The law applies to DOs too (3162(E)), and both boards' rules repeat it (OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(5); 510:10-3-8(b)(4)).

Medical marijuana for MDs

MDs registered with OMMA as recommending physicians must meet the medical marijuana education requirements of 63 O.S. 427.10 and OMMA's rules (OAC 435:10-15-1(a)(6)). The Medical Board's rule does not set the hours itself; check OMMA's current requirement. Medical marijuana CME certified by the ACCME or approved by the Board counts toward your 60 hours.

Federal requirement

The federal DEA requires a one-time 8 hours of training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders (the MATE Act) when you first register or renew a DEA registration. It is a federal requirement, separate from Oklahoma's rules.

Checklist before you renew

MDs

  1. Reregister every year in the month you were first licensed; there is no grace period.
  2. If you hold a DEA registration, complete 1 hour on pain management, or opioid use or addiction, every year.
  3. Every third year, have 60 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 or AAFP Prescribed credit from the preceding three years.
  4. Keep certificates in case you are audited.

DOs

  1. Earn 16 AOA Category 1 hours between July 1 and June 30 (AMA PRA Category 1 only if you are ABMS-certified).
  2. Make sure one of them is an OSBOE-approved pain management, opioid use or addiction course, unless you have no OBNDD or DEA authority.
