MD (medical doctor)
- Hours
- 2 hours
- How often
- Every renewal
- Who
- Physicians registered with the DEA
- Renewal cycle
- Renews every 2 years; licenses expire at December 31 of even-numbered years (the license lapses after that date; there is no grace period to practice).
- Board
- Alaska State Medical Board
- The rule
- AS 08.64.312(b) and 12 AAC 40.200(a)(2): at least 2 of the hours, earned in the two years before renewal, must be education in pain management and opioid use and addiction. The renewal form lets you request a waiver if you do not hold a DEA registration number, until you apply for one. The hours count within the 50. In May 2026 the Board approved for public comment a change to 12 AAC 40.200 that would add nutrition CME and lower this topic to 1 hour; it was not adopted when this was checked, and the statute still says 2 hours.
