First renewal
Confirm with your Board The rule sets no first-renewal waiver or proration: the attestation covers 40 hours in the prior two years. Full-time residency or fellowship training satisfies the requirement. With the move to two-year birthday licenses, confirm with the Board how the 40 hours apply if your first license term is shorter than two years.
Reporting
At renewal you attest that you met the requirement (IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04.a). The Board may require more evidence to verify compliance and may conduct CME audits (100.04.b and the Board's FAQ). The Board may condition, limit, suspend or refuse to renew the license of anyone who has not complied. The rule sets no record-retention period; keep certificates for at least the two-year period. A lapsed license (under five years) can be reinstated with back fees, a reinstatement fee and proof of the required CE.

DOPL announced in March 2026 that from April 1, 2026 it is moving Board of Medicine licensees from one-year or two-year licenses renewed in June to two-year licenses that expire on the licensee's birthday (birth year ignored), phased in by whether you were born in an even or odd year; new licenses run at least two years to a birthday. DOPL says the CE requirement does not change. IDAPA 24.33.01.100.04: at renewal you attest to 40 hours of practice-relevant CME during the prior two years, or to current specialty board certification (ABMS, AOA or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada), or to full-time residency or fellowship training. Check your own expiration date in your DOPL online account.

Deadline

In Idaho, the date depends on your license: your birthday, every two years (licenses are moving from annual or June renewal to two-year licenses that expire on your birthday, phased in by birth year from April 1, 2026).

Credit that counts

  • AOA Category 1-AThe Board's FAQ: education offered by the AOA is considered approved. The rule applies to physicians and osteopathic physicians alike.
  • AOA Category 1-B Confirm with your BoardThe Board's FAQ says AOA-offered education is approved and asks for Category 1, without naming 1-A or 1-B. Confirm before counting AOA 1-B.
  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™The Board's FAQ: 40 hours of practice-relevant Category 1 CME every two years; all education offered by ACCME-accredited institutions or organizations (and reciprocating organizations) is considered approved. The rule text in effect since July 1, 2025 says only 'practice-relevant CME' and no longer says Category 1 (the 2023 rule did); the Board's FAQ still says Category 1, so plan on Category 1.
  • AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named by the rule or the Board. The FAQ approves education from ACCME-accredited organizations, and the AAFP is ACCME-accredited, but the Board has not said AAFP Prescribed credit counts; confirm with the Board.
