First renewal
K.A.R. 100-15-5(a)(2): the continuing education requirement does not apply to anyone renewing a license for the first time.
Credit minimum
Confirm with your Board K.A.R. 100-15-5(a)(1)(A): at least 20 of the 50 credits must be category I (40 of 100, or 60 of 150, under the longer options). Category I is the Board's own format-based definition, not an accreditation label; AMA PRA Category 1, AOA 1-A and AAFP Prescribed activities normally qualify, but the rule does not say so.
Reporting
You certify on the renewal application which option you completed (K.A.R. 100-15-5(a)(1)). Keep documentation for at least four years after the date you certify; if the Board asks in writing, you have 30 days to send proof (K.A.R. 100-15-6). The Board has partnered with CE Broker for optional tracking. Charitable healthcare providers can earn 1 CE credit for every 2 hours of free care to medically indigent people, up to 20 credits per licensure period (K.S.A. 65-2809(j)). One year of postgraduate training counts as 50 category I credits (K.A.R. 100-15-4(h)). You can ask for an extension if illness, injury or other hardship in the last 12 months kept you from finishing (K.A.R. 100-15-5(c)).
Board
Kansas State Board of Healing Arts

K.A.R. 100-15-1: each license to practice medicine and surgery expires on June 30 of each year. The Board's renewal-dates page lists the MD renewal cycle as May 15 to July 31 with late renewal July 1 to 31, and its MD FAQ says MD licenses "expire on July 31st" while also calling July 1 to 31 the late renewal period; we follow the regulation's June 30 date. Licenses are renewed every year. At each renewal you certify one of three options under K.A.R. 100-15-5(a)(1): 50 credits in the 18 months before the expiration date (at least 20 category I and 1 category III), 100 credits in the 30 months before it (at least 40 category I and 2 category III), or 150 credits in the 42 months before it (at least 60 category I and 3 category III). We plan with the 18-month option. Under K.S.A. 65-2809(d) a license not renewed by the renewal date is canceled if not renewed, with a late fee, within 30 days.

Credit that counts

  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ Confirm with your BoardK.A.R. 100-15-4(b) defines category I by format (lecture, panel, workshop, seminar, symposium or other structured, interactive, formal learning presented by a qualified person) and K.A.R. 100-15-7 lets distance-learning activities qualify if they include a way to contact the provider, an assessment, a time limit and a printable certificate. The rule never names AMA PRA Category 1. Most AMA PRA Category 1 activities fit that definition, but confirm with the Board for unusual formats.
  • AOA Category 1-A Confirm with your BoardNot named in the rule. AOA Category 1-A activities are formal, structured programs that should meet the K.A.R. 100-15-4(b) definition of category I; confirm with the Board.
  • AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named in the rule or on the Board's pages we could read. AAFP Prescribed activities should meet the format test for category I in K.A.R. 100-15-4(b); confirm with the Board.
  • AMA PRA Category 2 Confirm with your BoardK.A.R. 100-15-4(c): category II covers health-related activities that do not meet category I, including clinical consultations, quality-of-care review, teaching, journal clubs, database searches tied to patient care and self-instructional materials. Up to 29 of the 50 credits (18-month option) can be category II. The rule does not use the term AMA PRA Category 2.
