First renewal
Confirm with your Board Rule 02-373 ch. 1 §11(4)(B): "CME will be prorated during the first licensure period." The Board's FAQ says proration depends on the expiration date of the initial license (a first license issued for less than two years). The rule publishes no proration table, so we plan for the full 40 — confirm your prorated hours with the Board. Applicants for initial licensure do not submit CME.
Reporting
You affirm on the online renewal that you met the CME requirements (rule §8(3)(A)(3)); proof is sent only if you are audited. The Board's FAQ says it randomly audits 10% of renewal applicants each month. No retention period is set; keep certificates at least until the next renewal. Current ABMS certification, including maintenance of certification, is deemed equivalent to the 40 hours (not to the opioid hours); lifetime certification is not. Extensions of up to six months are possible for illness or hardship (§11(4)(A)); CME is stayed during active military duty. If CME is incomplete, an inactive license is issued (§11(1)(C)).
Board
Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine

Rule 02-373 ch. 1 §8(1) and 32 M.R.S. §3280-A: licenses expire at midnight on the last day of the birth month every two years, by birth-year parity. §11(1)(A): at least 40 Category 1 hours during each biennial licensing period. §8(2): the Board sends notice at least 60 days before expiration; an unrenewed license expires, may be reinstated within 90 days with the renewal and late fees, and then lapses.

Deadline

In Maine, the date depends on your license: midnight on the last day of your birth month — in odd-numbered years if you were born in an odd-numbered year, even-numbered years if born in an even-numbered year.

Credit that counts

  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™Rule 02-373 ch. 1 §11(2)(A)(1): programs sponsored or co-sponsored by an organization accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education, the ACCME or the Maine Medical Association's CME committee. Other Category 1 options: published papers, posters, teaching, medically related degrees, residency (50 hours a year), and the AMA PRA, AAFP membership or ACOG program (25 hours a year).
  • AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardThe Board accepts AAFP membership requirements completed in the prior 24 months as 25 Category 1 hours a year (§11(2)(A)(7)(b)) and names AAFP as an accepted source for the opioid hours (Chapter 21 §5(1)). AAFP Prescribed credit itself is not named for the general 40 hours; AAFP is ACCME-accredited, so its programs should count — confirm with the Board.
  • AOA Category 1-A Confirm with your BoardThe MD rule does not name AOA credit for the general 40 hours (only AMA, ACCME and Maine Medical Association sponsors); Chapter 21 accepts AOA credit for the opioid hours. Confirm with the Board before counting AOA Category 1 toward the 40.
