- First renewal
- 172 NAC 10-004.03(B): the Department waives continuing competency requirements for credential holders first credentialed within the 24 months immediately before the renewal date (Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-146(2)(b)). Because every license expires on the same date, that covers anyone licensed in the current cycle.
- Reporting
- To renew you must submit the renewal application and demonstrate that you met the continuing competency requirement on or before the expiration date (172 NAC 10-004; Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-146(1)). You are responsible for keeping certificates or records; the Department or Board may biennially audit a random sample of renewals, and a license whose holder fails to comply with an audit expires 30 days after notice and an opportunity for a hearing (Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-146(3)). Neither the statute nor the rules set a retention period; keep records at least through the next renewal. The Department may waive requirements for circumstances beyond your control, and active military service waives them (38-146(2); 172 NAC 10-004.03(A)).

172 NAC 88-007: all physician and osteopathic physician licenses expire on October 1 of each even-numbered year, regardless of when the license was issued. Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-142: credentials are renewed biennially; a license not renewed by the expiration date expires and must be reinstated. 172 NAC 88-008.01(A)(iii): the 50 hours are earned in the 24 months immediately preceding the expiration date; if you earn more than 50, up to 25 hours carry over to the next 24-month period.

Credit that counts
- AOA Category 1-A172 NAC 88-008.01(A)(i): Category 1 continuing education approved by the AOA counts. The AOA Continuing Medical Education Certification earned in the 24 months before expiration also satisfies the requirement (88-008.01(B)).
- AOA Category 1-B Confirm with your BoardThe rule says "Category 1" approved by the AOA without separating 1-A and 1-B. AOA Category 1-B is part of AOA Category 1, so it appears to count; confirm with the Board.
- AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™172 NAC 88-008.01(A)(i): 50 hours of Category 1 continuing education approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or the AOA. The DHHS page says "Category 1 AMA approved continuing education." An AMA Physician's Recognition Award earned in the 24 months before expiration also satisfies the requirement (88-008.01(B)).
- AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named in the rule or on the DHHS page. The rule accepts Category 1 CE approved by the ACCME; AAFP is ACCME-accredited and the AMA accepts AAFP Prescribed credit as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1, but the Board has not said so in writing.
