- First renewal
- Confirm with your Board Neither A.R.S. 32-1434 nor R4-16-102 waives or prorates CME at the first renewal; the rule simply requires 40 hours in the two calendar years before biennial registration. We plan for the full 40; confirm with the Board if your first renewal comes less than two years after licensure.
- Reporting
- You certify on the renewal form, under penalty of perjury, that you completed the CME for the two calendar years before renewal (R4-16-102(D)). The Board randomly audits at least 10 percent of physicians every two years (A.R.S. 32-1434); failing to meet CME without adequate cause is grounds for probation, suspension or revocation. Keep certificates for the period you may be audited (the rule sets no retention period). Extensions are available for illness, military service, missionary work or living abroad (R4-16-102(C)).

A.R.S. 32-1430: each active MD license is renewed every other year on or before the licensee's birthday. R4-16-102(A): 40 credit hours of CME during the two calendar years preceding biennial registration. Excess hours do not carry over to the next two-year cycle.
Deadline
In Arizona, the date depends on your license: your birthday, every other year.

Credit that counts
- AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™R4-16-102(B)(4): education programs certified as Category 1 by an ACCME-accredited organization. Programs from ACCME-accredited providers also count under (B)(5).
- AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named in the rule. R4-16-102(B)(5) accepts medical education programs provided by an organization accredited by the ACCME; the AAFP is ACCME-accredited, so its programs appear to count, but the Board has not said so for AAFP Prescribed credit from other sponsors.
- AMA PRA Category 2 Confirm with your BoardThe rule does not use the term Category 2, but R4-16-102(B)(6)–(8) gives credit for teaching, publishing or presenting papers, self-instruction, reading scientific literature, board-exam preparation and committee work. Confirm that a given activity fits those categories.
- AOA Category 1-A Confirm with your BoardR4-16-102 does not name AOA credit for CME (it names the AOA only for training institutions). AOA Category 1-A programs from ACCME-accredited joint providers count under (B)(4)–(5); confirm before relying on AOA-only credit.
