- First renewal
- Confirm with your Board Rule 64B15-13.001(1)(b): if your license was first issued after July 1 of the second year of the biennium, you are excused from the 40 hours but must still complete Laws and Rules / Ethics (1 hour), Prevention of Medical Errors (2 hours), HIV/AIDS (1 hour) and, if DEA-registered, the controlled substance course (2 hours). Otherwise the full 40 hours apply. We plan for the full 40 — confirm which applies to your license date.
- Credit minimum
- At least 20 of the 40 hours must be AOA Category 1-A (Rule 64B15-13.001(2)). Licensees on active military duty are exempt (Rule 64B15-13.001(7)).
- Home study
- Confirm with your Board Rule 64B15-13.001(5) caps home study at 8 hours per biennium. The rule does not say where distance learning ends and home study begins, so confirm how a self-paced online course is counted before planning around it. Licensees on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces may earn all 40 hours by distance learning or home study.
- Reporting
- Florida tracks CME in CE Broker. All CME must be recorded there before you renew; keep proof of your hours for at least 4 years after the renewal period (Rule 64B15-13.003).

Section 456.031, F.S., and Rule 64B15-13.001(1)(c). Check your CE Broker transcript to see whether it is due in your current cycle. The rule's general list of Board-approved courses (64B15-13.001(4)(a)) includes courses offered or approved by the AOA or the AMA or their divisional societies, so an AOA- or AMA-approved course on the topic should count; confirm with the Board if in doubt. - HIV/AIDS1 hour · By the first renewal only · Every licensee

Section 456.0341, F.S.: a one-time 1-hour Board-approved course, due by January 1, 2021. The statute sets no deadline for physicians licensed after that date, and the Board's renewal page does not list it; confirm whether it applies to you. - Prescribing controlled substances2 hours · Every renewal · Physicians registered with the DEA
Section 456.0301, F.S., and Rule 64B15-13.001(1)(e) (effective June 15, 2026): 2 hours at each biennial renewal for DEA registrants, counted only from the 17 providers named in the rule: the Florida Medical Association, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Florida Academy of Family Physicians, Florida College of Emergency Physicians, Baptist Health South Florida/Quality Network, InforMed, Florida Psychiatric Society, NetCE, The Doctors Company, TeamHealth Institute, CE Group, AchieveCE, UCF College of Medicine, Integris Group, White Coat Institute (GetMyCME), Orlando Health and Florida AHEC. Unlike the Board of Medicine's list, it includes TeamHealth Institute and not the University of Florida. Since July 1, 2026 the course also covers pain treatment for patients with sickle cell disease. - Medical marijuana qualified physician course (FMA/FOMA)2 hours · Every renewal · Only some physicians — see the rule note
Section 381.986(3)(a), F.S.: only for physicians who want to be (or remain) qualified physicians who certify patients for medical marijuana. A 2-hour course and examination offered by the Florida Medical Association or the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, completed before being approved as a qualified physician and before each license renewal. Only the FMA or FOMA course counts; it may be taken online and costs no more than $500. The statute does not say whether it counts toward the general CME hours.
