First renewal
Minn. R. 5605.0200: your first three-year cycle starts on the first day of your birth month after initial licensure, and CME taken between licensure and that date may be credited to the first cycle. The rule does not prorate the 75 hours, but the first cycle is a full three years. Full-time residents and fellows may be exempted (Minn. R. 5605.1000).
Reporting
At the renewal that ends your cycle you attest on the Board's form that you completed the CME (Minn. R. 5605.0900); the Board may ask for more evidence. The Board audits and says documentation "must be retained by each licensee in the event they are selected for an audit"; no retention period is set, so keep records at least until the next cycle's report is accepted. Current ABMS, AOA or RCPSC (re)certification or maintenance of certification is accepted in lieu of CME (Minn. R. 5605.0700; Board page). Emeritus registrants and full-time residents and fellows are exempt (Minn. R. 5605.1000). No tracking system is required.

Credit that counts

  • AOA Category 1-AMinn. R. 5605.0300: the Board accepts "the equivalent of Category 1 credit hours as defined by the American Osteopathic Association", for every physician.
  • AOA Category 1-B Confirm with your BoardThe rule accepts AOA-defined Category 1 equivalents without separating 1-A and 1-B. Category 1-B is part of AOA Category 1, so it appears to count; confirm with the Board.
  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™Minn. R. 5605.0300: activities designated AMA PRA Category 1 by a sponsor accredited by the ACCME or an ACCME-recognized state medical society.
  • AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named in the rule. Minn. R. 5605.0300 accepts Category 1 equivalents from "organizations that have reciprocal arrangements with the Physician Recognition Award program of the American Medical Association"; the AMA accepts AAFP Prescribed credit as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1, but the Board has not said so in writing.
