- First renewal
- Rule 24.1.2-24.1.3: if you were first licensed in Vermont during the period and held the license for less than one year at expiration, no CME is due at the first renewal; for one year or more (but less than two), you need at least 15 hours, including the required subjects. Time runs from the date the Board approved the license to the expiration date.
- Reporting
- You certify on the renewal application that you met the CME requirement; you do not file certificates. Keep documentation for four years; the Board may audit for up to four years and audits a random sample after every renewal cycle (Rules 24.1.1.1-24.1.1.2). If you are short, you cannot certify; file a make-up plan with the renewal application and finish within 120 days (Rule 24.3). Physicians not in active practice must still complete the CME to renew.

Board Rule 7.1: licenses renew on a fixed two-year schedule and the lapse date is printed on the license; the Board emails a renewal notice 90 days before. The Board's 2026 CME guidance counts hours to November 30, 2026, the end of the current two-year licensing period (Rule 24.1.1). The next renewal after that is November 30, 2028.

Credit that counts
- AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™Rule 24.2.1-24.2.2: activities approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit qualify, including the AMA's two credits per hour for presenting. Up to 15 hours for a year of an approved residency or fellowship may count if you write to the Board (Rule 24.2.4).
- AAFP Prescribed creditThe Board's CME guidance says that in 2025 the Board approved AAFP CME activity, so for the 2026 renewal the requirement is 30 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 or AAFP credit. Rule 24.2 itself (effective May 1, 2024) still names AMA PRA Category 1 only.
- AOA Category 1-A Confirm with your BoardNot named in Rule 24 or the Board's guidance for MD licensees. Confirm with the Board before counting AOA-only credit.
