- First renewal
- R 338.2441(2) applies to a renewing licensee who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application; because the license term runs 3 years from the issue date, the full 150 hours apply at the first renewal. LARA's renewal attestation states the 150 hours 'if licensed during the full 3-year renewal cycle'.
- Credit minimum
- Confirm with your Board R 338.2443(1)(d): at least 75 of the 150 hours must come from the category 1 activities listed in R 338.2443(2). Michigan's category 1 is its own list (ACCME/AMA/AAFP/AOA/MOA/MSMS programs, specialty board exams up to 50 hours, MOC activities up to 30 hours, approved clinical training up to 150 hours), not the same thing as AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Category 2 is limited to teaching, presentations, publications and committee work (R 338.2443(3)); AMA PRA Category 2 self-claimed credit is not on that list.
- Reporting
- You attest on the renewal application that you met the requirements; no certificates are submitted. LARA audits a random sample after each renewal period (R 338.2441(4)); audited licensees upload proof (LARA's CE Broker page says audit documentation goes into CE Broker). Keep CE records for 4 years after applying for renewal (R 338.2441(3)) and implicit bias records for 6 years (R 338.7004(6)). Using CE Broker is optional; the Board does not keep a record of your CE.

Mich Admin Code R 338.7002 lists medicine licenses as expiring triennially on the issue date. Under R 338.2441(2) the 150 hours must be earned during the 3 years immediately preceding the application for renewal; the implicit bias hours must also fall within that cycle.
Deadline
In Michigan, the date depends on your license: the anniversary of your license's issue date, every three years.

MCL 333.16148 and R 338.2413: a one-time training covering types and venues of trafficking, identifying victims and warning signs in healthcare settings, and reporting resources; you certify it on the renewal application. Acceptable providers (R 338.2413(1)(b)): a nationally or state-recognized health-related organization, a state or federal agency, an educational program approved for initial licensure or a college or university, or reading a qualifying peer-reviewed or professional journal article; teleconference, webinar, online, live or printed media all count. The rule sets no minimum length (the 1 hour here is a placeholder). LARA says it does not count toward the CE hours unless it also meets the Board's CE rules. - Opioids and controlled substances awareness training Confirm with your Board1 hour · Once · Only some physicians — see the rule note
R 338.3135(1) (amended effective May 28, 2024): "An individual who is applying for or renewing a controlled substance license shall complete a training in opioids and controlled substances awareness before applying for the license or renewal." Content: utilizing MAPS, and state and federal laws on prescribing and dispensing controlled substances (may come from more than one program). Accepted providers: a nationally or state-recognized health-related organization, a state or federal agency, any CE program accepted by a Michigan health licensing board, or a board-approved educational program or college. Modalities: teleconference or webinar, online presentation, live presentation, printed or electronic media. No minimum length (the 1 hour here is a placeholder). Subrule (4) required existing licensees to complete it by the end of the first renewal cycle beginning after January 4, 2019, and LARA describes it as training you 'have completed', but subrule (1) can be read as due before every renewal — confirm with LARA. Keep proof for 3 renewal periods plus 1 year.
Credit that counts
- AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™R 338.2443(2)(a): programs approved or offered by the ACCME (including joint providership), the AMA, the AOA, the AAFP, the Michigan Osteopathic Association or the Michigan State Medical Society count as Michigan category 1, up to 150 hours.
- AAFP Prescribed creditR 338.2443(2)(a) names the American Academy of Family Physicians among the organizations whose approved or offered programs count as category 1 CE.
- AOA Category 1-AR 338.2443(2)(a) names the American Osteopathic Association and the Michigan Osteopathic Association.
- AOA Category 1-B Confirm with your BoardThe rule accepts programs 'approved or offered by' the AOA, including journal articles with a self-study component; it does not use the AOA 1-A/1-B labels, so confirm a given 1-B activity.
- Board certification (MOC) activity Confirm with your BoardMich Admin Code R 338.2443(2)(c): activities required to maintain specialty certification count as category 1, one hour per 60 minutes, at most 30 hours each renewal period; passing a board certification or recertification exam counts as 50 hours (R 338.2443(2)(b)). The planner does not apply the 30-hour limit, so confirm how many of your MOC hours count.
