First renewal
The current rules have no first-renewal waiver or proration: the first registration period runs from the date the license was granted to the first renewal date (two years), and the Board says CME is fulfilled after licensure, at renewal. Older summaries that mention prorated first-renewal hours describe the pre-2019 renewal schedule.
Reporting
You certify completion on the online renewal application (OAC 4731-10-08(A)). The Board audits a random sample; if selected, you must send documentation within the time on the notice (ORC 4731.282(E)–(F); fines up to $5,000 or discipline for false certification). Keep records showing each activity, date and hours for two years after the end of the registration period (OAC 4731-10-08(C)). CE Broker tracking is optional, not required.

ORC 4731.281: a license is valid for two years and expires two years from the date of issuance; each renewal is valid for another two years. The 50 hours are earned in the registration period, the time between the granting or last renewal of the license and the next renewal date (OAC 4731-10-01(G)). Failure to renew automatically suspends the license.

Deadline

In Ohio, the date depends on your license: the date two years after your license was issued, and every two years after that.

Credit that counts

  • AOA Category 1-AOAC 4731-10-02(A)(2): activities AOA recognizes as Category 1 and certified by the Ohio Osteopathic Association, an OOA- or AOA-accredited provider, or awarded directly by the AOA. The rule applies to every licensee, MD or DO.
  • AOA Category 1-B Confirm with your BoardThe rule accepts AOA "category 1" without naming 1-A or 1-B. AOA Category 1-B is part of AOA Category 1, so it appears to count; confirm with the Board.
  • AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™OAC 4731-10-02(A)(1): activities AMA recognizes as Category 1 and certified by the Ohio State Medical Association, an OSMA- or ACCME-accredited provider, or awarded directly by the AMA.
  • AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named in the rule or on the Board's page. The rule accepts activities the AMA recognizes as Category 1 certified by an ACCME-accredited provider; the AAFP is ACCME-accredited and the AMA accepts AAFP Prescribed credit as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1, but the Board has not said so in writing.
