- First renewal
- NAC 630.157 prorates the hours for physicians licensed after a biennial period begins: 40 hours if licensed in its first 6 months, 30 in the second 6 months, 20 in the third and 10 in the fourth, all AMA PRA Category 1. The Board's summary keeps the 2-hour ethics and topic requirements at every level. Physicians who completed a full year of residency or fellowship in the U.S. or Canada during the period are exempt (NAC 630.153(2)).
- Credit minimum
- NAC 630.153(1): all 40 hours must come from programs offering AMA Category 1 credit (Board-approved CME and up to 20 hours for medical review for the Board also count).
- Reporting
- At biennial registration you submit evidence of the CME in the form the Board requires (NAC 630.153(1)). If you do not, the license is not renewed; it can be reinstated within 2 years by paying twice the registration fee and showing 40 hours of AMA Category 1 credit from the preceding 2 years (NAC 630.153(3)). Failing to obtain the required controlled-substance training is grounds for discipline (NRS 630.306). Keep your certificates; the rules do not set a retention period.

NRS 630.267: every holder of a license to practice medicine completes biennial registration on or before June 30 of each odd-numbered year; the license expires if registration is not completed. NAC 630.153(1): 40 hours of CME in the preceding 2 years, 2 in medical ethics and 20 in your scope of practice or specialty.

NAC 630.154 (still printed in the NAC as checked 2026-10-08): a course on the medical consequences of an act of terrorism involving a weapon of mass destruction, within 2 years of initial licensure (physicians licensed before October 1, 2003 had until September 30, 2005); AMA Category 1, in addition to the 40 hours. But the rule cites NRS 630.253, and the current NRS 630.253 (amended 2025) no longer contains a terrorism or weapons-of-mass-destruction course, and the Board's CME summary does not list it. It is likely obsolete; confirm with the Board before taking it. The rule sets no number of hours: 1 hour is a planning placeholder. - Substance use and other addictive disorders and the prescribing of opioids2 hours · Every renewal · Physicians registered with the DEA
- Cultural competency and diversity, equity and inclusion (psychiatrists)2 hours · Every renewal · Only some physicians — see the rule note
NRS 630.253(2)(d) and NAC 630.1567: each psychiatrist completes at least 2 hours each biennial period. Counts toward the 40. - Stigma, discrimination and unrecognized bias toward people who have or are at high risk of HIV2 hours · Once · Only some physicians — see the rule note
NRS 630.253(2)(f) and NAC 630.1563 (effective September 16, 2024): physicians who provide or supervise emergency medical services in a hospital, or primary care (family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, OB/GYN), complete at least 2 hours within 2 years after beginning that work. Counts toward the 40.
Credit that counts
- AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™NAC 630.153(1): each program must offer an AMA Category 1 certificate, be approved by the Board, and be sponsored by an organization accredited by the AMA or ACCME. The Board's summary: all CME must be AMA Category 1 or Board approved.
- AAFP Prescribed credit Confirm with your BoardNot named. The rule requires a certificate of AMA Category 1 credit from an AMA- or ACCME-accredited sponsor; AAFP Prescribed credit alone may not meet that. Confirm with the Board.
